KIDS PACK PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Every child should have the chance to succeed. Through Kids Pack, we are working to ensure
that they do. “Kids Packs are a great support for our kids. They are such a welcome addition to
our students’ weekend! We feel so grateful to receive it.” – Elementary School Teacher

Why Kids Pack: 1 in 4 children in this region lives in poverty and is at risk of going to bed
hungry. More than half of the children in public schools in our service area are enrolled in the
federal Free and Reduced Meal program, and many children rely on these school meals as their
main source of nutrition on weekdays. But they do not have school meals on weekends, leaving
a multiple meal gap when children go hungry. Research shows that hunger, even in its mildest
forms, can have lasting harm on children. Hungry children have lower overall health and, as a
result, miss more days of school and are less prepared to learn when they can attend. Fatigue
and decreased mental health disrupt positive social and classroom behavior.

Who We Serve: Kids Pack serves children in Kindergarten to 8th Grade who are facing dire
income situations that limit access to regular and nutritious weekend food. Among those we
serve are children living in a car, garage, or backhouse without a bed of their own; who rely on an
older sibling or extended family to raise them while their parents work; are latchkey without
someone to prepare meals; and are in families facing hardships such as unemployment, major
illness, injury, or death of a parent. The Kids Pack program provides nutritious food to 2,000
children in these situations on weekends when school meals are unavailable.

How Kids Pack Works: We partner with 12 local school districts to identify the children most in
need of receiving Kids Pack services. Every Friday before leaving school, children enrolled in the
program pick up a backpack from a trusted staff member. The packs are distributed in a way
that considers the child’s privacy and self-esteem. Each Kids Pack is filled with nutritious, nonperishable, easy-to-prepare foods that are high in protein, calcium, and vitamin C, which are often lacking in the diets of children experiencing low-income. Not only does the Kids Pack
provide nourishment over the weekend, but it also provides security, consistency, and a sense of
belonging – letting children focus on learning and growing rather than on an empty stomach.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
This Kids Pack Encouragement Messages event will be held between Nov. 15 and Dec. 3, 2021
(date and times can be modified to best accommodate your group). For this opportunity,
volunteers will create note inserts containing short motivational messages to recipients
The supplies for the messages will be delivered to your worksite(s) to be completed prior to the event. This
will allow for more employees to be involved in the project.

PROJECT IMPACT: Through this event, volunteers will prepare motivational messages. These will be delivered to school children
experiencing very low-income in our local schools along with nutritional food distributed through the Kids Pack program. Since 2005, Kids Pack has consistently
demonstrated positive results. 82% of parents/guardians say that Kids Pack is the reason their
child has enough to eat on weekends. 72% of teachers say Kids Pack improves student attitude,
behavior, attendance, class participation, and grades.
